Sustainability at Löwenstein Medical.

Giving the world air to breathe – putting responsibility into practice, shaping the future.

As a developer of life-sustaining medical technology, we bear a special responsibility: to the people who use our products, to our employees – and to the environment in which we live and work. Sustainability is not a side issue to us, but an integral part of our corporate strategy. It begins with product development and extends across the entire supply chain, from energy management to social responsibility.

We are convinced: Those who promote health must also protect the foundations of life. That’s why we design our processes, products, and partnerships to make a positive impact – today and for generations to come.

Portrait Benjamin Löwenstein

What sustainability means in concrete terms to us is that we operate in harmony with our society and the environment, managing resources for the long term, preserving substance and conserving resources. It means taking responsibility and bearing entrepreneurial risks in order to actively shape the future.

Benjamin Löwenstein
CEO/Managing Director

The Löwenstein Group published its first voluntary sustainability report for 2024.

Sustainability is more than a strategic goal for us – it is part of our identity as a healthcare group. The 2024 report documented our commitment to ecological, social, and economic responsibility – transparent, measurable, and future-oriented.

Our actions

Concrete actions for a sustainable future.

We focus on effective, verifiable actions across the three dimensions of sustainability – ecological, social, and economic:

  • Climate protection: Our goal is carbon neutrality across the entire value chain (Scope 1–3) by 2045. To achieve this, we systematically analyze emissions and focus on reduction, substitution, and compensation.
  • Energy efficiency: With around 536 kWp of installed photovoltaic capacity, energy-efficient new buildings, and the promotion of e-mobility, we are shaping our infrastructure for the future. Our production processes are also continuously reviewed for potential energy savings.
  • Sustainable products: Our medical technology is durable, repairable, and recyclable. Initial life cycle analyses (LCAs) provide important insights into the environmental impact of our products – and help us implement targeted improvements.
  • Supply chain & human rights: Our procurement processes are analyzed using the Osapiens HUB software, among other tools. We conduct AI-supported risk analyses, establish clear standards, and take action in cases of non-compliance – for a fair and transparent supply chain.

Our contribution

Responsibility beyond the organization.

We take action where help is needed – and where we can make a difference with our expertise and resources:

  • Social commitment. For many years, we have been supporting a variety of social projects, such as Projekt HOPE e.V. – most recently by donating a Lifetherm 2000 warming bed to Causeni Hospital in Moldova. Our goal: to provide tangible support for newborns in medically underserved regions.
  • Partnerships: We are part of initiatives such as HealthGoGreen and White Dot, which promote a sustainable transformation of the healthcare sector. Together with other stakeholders, we drive innovation and set new standards.
  • Parts of our environmental and energy management systems are certified according to ISO 14001 and ISO 50001. These standards form the basis for our continuous improvement processes and ensure external transparency.
Photovoltaics

The following example illustrates how Löwenstein Medical is committed to climate protection – it represents just one of many initiatives.

We are increasingly focusing on the use of photovoltaic systems at our sites as part of our commitment to renewable energy.

We are particularly proud of the photovoltaic system at our Kammerstein site. With an output of 317 kWp, this system generates around 268,000 kilowatt hours per year. In 2024, these photovoltaic systems delivered a peak output of 536 kWp.

In addition, we are planning to further expand our photovoltaic capacity – at sites such as Neuhäusel, Hamburg, Kammerstein, Cologne, Bad Wünnenberg, and Bad Krozingen – to become even more environmentally friendly and less dependent on conventional energy sources.

Our drive

Values that unite – innovation that protects.

Our motivation stems from our corporate philosophy: Help people, protect lives, secure the future.

  • Value orientation: For us, sustainability is not a trend, but an expression of our values. It is firmly embedded in our corporate culture and actively practiced by our leaders and employees worldwide.
  • Innovation: We develop medical technology that not only saves lives but also conserves resources – through energy-efficient devices, modular design, and digital solutions.
  • Responsibility: Our employees share this commitment – in development, production, sales, and administration. Training and internal programs promote awareness and the implementation of sustainable principles in everyday work.

The following examples provide insight into Löwenstein Medical’s social commitment and represent just a snapshot of our various efforts.

Opening of the Rhein-Lahn hospice in Nassau

Through many years of close collaboration with the supporting association, an institution has been created that offers people in the final phase of life a sense of security, empathy, and dignified, compassionate care, while also providing attentive support to their loved ones.

As a co-shareholder of Hospiz Rhein-Lahn gGmbH, the Löwenstein Family Foundation has played a major role in its creation and makes an important contribution to regional health and social care with this commitment.

Löwenstein Medical is also engaged in sponsorships and makes donations, both financial and in kind, according to its guiding principle of “With people in mind.”

Medical care for children in Sierra Leone

In October 2024, the Löwenstein Group supported the organization Cap Anamur/Deutsche Not-Ärzte e.V. in an important project in Sierra Leone: equipping a children’s hospital in Freetown, which is one of the central facilities for pediatric care in the country.

The donation included a warming bed as well as several oxygen concentrators, which are directly used for the care of newborns and severely ill children. In addition, the project was accompanied by financial support to sustainably strengthen the medical infrastructure.

Commitment to humanity at sea

The Löwenstein Group stands for a value-oriented corporate culture that assumes social responsibility not only locally, but also globally. In 2024, we donated high-quality medical technology to the non-profit organization Sea Punks e.V. – an initiative that is dedicated with great determination to civilian search and rescue in the Mediterranean.

The donated equipment is directly deployed on board the rescue ship “Sea Punk I,” which has been active in the central Mediterranean since September 2023. The goal is to significantly improve the initial care of the people who have been rescued – many of whom are hypothermic, dehydrated, or injured when they are rescued from unseaworthy boats.

Our donation illustrates the Löwenstein Group’s self-understanding: Economic success and social engagement go hand in hand with us. We thank all employees and partner companies
who supported this initiative.

Construction of a school in Haiti

The school in Haiti, funded by the Löwenstein Family Foundation, is complete and classes have begun. Six classrooms are now complete, three of which were funded by us, as were the restroom facilities. The project is being carried out in cooperation with “Students Build for Haiti,” an association from Kempen. We have direct contact with the initiators and can assure that the money is well invested.

For years, apprentices from the Rhein-Maas Vocational College have regularly traveled to Haiti to build structures together with Haitians that serve the education of young people. Our goal is the sustainable improvement of infrastructure.

The construction of a medical first aid center is in planning. The property offers ample space to also allow for the temporary accommodation of patients. German physicians are to be recruited to work on site temporarily and to exchange expertise with Haitian healthcare professionals.

Our standard

Transparency, commitment, and future viability.

We strive to improve – every single day. For us, sustainability is a continuous process of learning and improvement:

  • Transparency: Our voluntary sustainability report provides transparency about our goals, progress, and challenges. We report openly and honestly – even about things that are not yet perfect.
  • Commitment: We rely on clear standards and continuous improvement – in processes, products, and partnerships. Our internal guidelines and external audits ensure the quality of our sustainability efforts.
  • Future viability: We think long-term and act today for tomorrow. For us, sustainability is not a project with an end date, but a path we continue to follow consistently – together with our stakeholders.
Compliance and corruption prevention

The following excerpts illustrate how Löwenstein Medical takes economic responsibility.

Integrity is a central value of the Löwenstein Group. Our Compliance Management System (CMS) is based on the principles of Avoid – Detect – Respond and supports lawful and value-based conduct. A code of conduct, clear guidelines, and regular training provide our employees with guidance in dealing with risks.

We consistently reject corruption. Our products persuade through their quality – not through unscrupulous means. For prevention, we rely on clear standards, specific guidelines, and transparent processes. Reports of violations or risks can be submitted at any time via the Löwenstein Integrity Line, our ombudsperson, or directly to the Group Compliance & Sustainability Officer.
