leoni 4 ventilation premature infants children with mother

Highly precise technology for the smallest patients.

In an interview with Dr. med. Ulrich Rochwalsky.

Please briefly introduce yourself.

My name is Ulrich Rochwalsky, and I am a pediatrician, neonatologist, and pediatric intensive care specialist. I have been working at the University Hospital Frankfurt for eight years – initially as senior attending physician and, for the past one and a half years, as head of neonatology. At the University Hospital Frankfurt in the Rhine-Main area, we operate a large intensive care unit for children and newborns. The unit includes 11 ventilated beds and 18 regular beds, as well as a neonatal intensive care unit.

Dr. med. Ulrich Rochwalsky, Head of Neonatology, University Hospital Frankfurt, Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine

Please explain to our readers which Löwenstein Medical products you work with and how long you’ve been working with them.

Our main piece of equipment is the Leoni ventilator. We have been using the “good old Leoni” on our unit for as long as I can remember. In addition, we have warming beds, resuscitation units, and initial care units.

What do you particularly appreciate about Löwenstein products as a user?

For me, Löwenstein Medical is synonymous with engineering excellence. For decades, the company has offered safe and precise products that are indispensable in our daily clinical work and have become part of the standard of care. As a user, you can rely on Löwenstein devices. It’s a company from our region, less than 100 kilometers from Frankfurt – and I think that’s fantastic.

What is especially important to you beyond the product itself?

For me, Löwenstein ranks among the best manufacturers of ventilators for children and newborns worldwide. Their neonatal ventilators stand out for their safety and innovation – and that alone is phenomenal. The world envies us for having such high-quality ventilators.

I met Mr. Reinhard Löwenstein in personal during a user training session. He has always supported us and advocated for our needs. He has initiated many innovations on our unit – also in collaboration with Mrs. Karin Schnabel (see also the interview with Mrs. Schnabel, Group Leader). It is an example of practical sustainability that a regional, family-run company is simply there for us and the newborns with people who stand behind their devices and are committed to supporting us. The values and close customer relationships at Löwenstein are tangible, which I think is great.

Were there any specific requirements for implementing Löwenstein products in your clinic?

We maintain very close and good contact with the field representatives. I also connected with the development team by participating in a user training session. In the past, we had intensive exchanges with the team to test a device in our clinical routine. I found the collaboration extremely positive.

We ventilate preterm babies with tiny lung volumes, weighing only 300 to 400 grams. For this, we need highly precise technology, as provided by Löwenstein. We can rely on these devices – they give us the confidence to provide optimal care for these extremely fragile children.

- Dr. med. Ulrich Rochwalsky

What makes neonatology so special in the clinical setting, and why do you think Löwenstein’s solutions fit so well in this context?

We sometimes ventilate premature infants weighing only 300 to 400 grams. These are tiny lung volumes we are dealing with – amounts smaller than a teaspoon, roughly one-tenth of a shot glass. These extremely small volumes must be applied with the highest precision. This calls for highly advanced, delicate technology, which Löwenstein does an excellent job of providing. Our patients are extremely fragile, leaving no room for inaccuracies. This makes it all the more important that we can rely on Löwenstein’s devices. They provide us with the safety and quality we need to care for these children in the best possible way.

Would you recommend Löwenstein to other hospitals?

Yes, of course – and we do so on a regular basis. When someone asks which device we recommend, I very specifically point to the models that we are using. This is a brand that I fully support – both in terms of quality and in terms of our own positive experience with them. When someone tells me that they want to set up a new neonatal unit, I recommend them to contact Löwenstein and get an offer. These are dependable products for the ventilation and care of children.

Thank you very much for the interview, Dr. med. Rochwalsky!
